DERA GHAZI KHAN/ MULTAN: Two brothers were executed at Dera Ghazi Khan Central Jail on Thursday.

Jail authorities said Ghulam Akbar and Hazoor Bakhsh had killed Abdul Sattar and Habibullah on July 5, 1996, over a ‘petty’ issue. The court sentenced them to death on two counts and fined them Rs50,000 each. Their appeals had been rejected by the High Court and the Supreme Court. They had also exhausted all avenues for mercy.

Jail authorities said the brothers were hanged at 5:30am on Thursday. They met their families a day before the execution. Their mother told The Express Tribune that her sons had attacked the men in self-defence. “They [the complainants] had broken into our house and attacked my sons…they had connections and we didn’t have the resources to bribe the police,” she said tearfully.

In Multan, the man who had killed former chief minister Ghulam Haider Wyne was executed at the Central Jail on Thursday.

Jail authorities said Zaman alias Zamani was the main accused in the case. He had killed Wyne during his election campaign in Mian Channu on September 29, 1993. The trial court had acquitted four of his alleged accomplices and sentenced Zaman to death. The higher courts had rejected his appeals and the president had turned down his mercy petition.

Jail officials said after the execution, Zaman’s body was handed over to his son Sakhi Noor. He was buried in Nusratpur, Mian Channu. app
