SUKKUR: A man put his daughters on sale in front of the Jacobabad Press Club to raise money for the payment of a fine worth Rs1.6 million imposed on his son by a jirga.

Ghulam Rasool Kotahar, a resident of Abdul Kareem Khoso village, brought his four minor daughters to Jacobabad Press Club and began the auction. The village lies within the limits of the Kareem Bux Khoso police station near Thull.

Ghulam Rasool told the media that a policeman, Ghous Bux Khoso, had accused his son, Ghulam Shabbir Katohar, of having illicit relations with his daughter some time ago. “Since then, the policeman started pressuring me to reconcile the matter through jirga or get ready for the dire consequences,” he said, adding that his son is innocent and the policeman wanted to implicate him in the case only to extort money.

According to Ghulam Rasool, the policeman finally organised a jirga headed by a landlord, Muhabat Khoso, a couple of days back. Ghulam Rasool was also summoned to record his statement. “After recording the statements of both the parties, the landlord declared my son as karo and slapped a fine of Rs1.6 million. I refused to accept the verdict of the jirga and left.”

Following his refusal, the policeman became angry and began issuing threats of dire consequences, said Ghulam Rasool, adding that the threats include killing his son. “Therefore, I am forced to sell my daughters to pay the amount of fine,” he said.

He further said that he also went to the Kareem Bux police station but the officials, instead of helping him, asked him to pay the amount to settle the dispute. When contacted, Jacobabad SSP Malik Zafar Iqbal said he has come to know about the matter but Ghulam Rasool has not approached him as yet. “Action will be taken against the responsible persons as soon as the complainant files the application,” he said.
