KARACHI: The police have been unable to figure out who opened fire at a car belonging to the grandson of the former chief minister of Balochistan, Mir Naseer Mengal.

The grandson of the former chief minister, Matiur Rehman and his nephew Samiullah, both young men in their early 20s, were injured in a firing incident in Defence Housing Authority around 1am on Friday.

They were taken to Ziauddin Hospital, Clifton, for treatment where doctors claimed their condition was stable but said that they were still under treatment as one of them had received a bullet in his hand and the other in his abdomen.

Initial investigation and statements suggest that the two men were in their car parked near Do Darya when the incident took place.

“The windows were closed,” said DSP Nayyarul Haq while talking to The Express Tribune about what Samiullah told them. “Two men arrived on a motorcycle and knocked the window. According to Samiullah, he tried to snatch the man’s pistol while rolling down the window. Somehow the trigger got pulled and he [Samiullah] was shot in the hand.” He added that Matiur Rehman was injured when the men fired at him as he got out of the car to chase them.

According to DSP Haq, investigations were still going on and so far they had not been able to ascertain the motive behind the incident.

“We cannot say anything about the nature of the incident,” he said. “Were the culprits street criminals or not, we don’t know.” He added that they still have to visit the crime scene to inspect it.

The inquiry officer of the case, sub-inspector Deedar Abbasi told The Express Tribune that the police found some contradictions in the victims’ statements.

“There are some loopholes in their statements. At first they told us that they went to the hospital directly,” he said. “Then they said that they went home and their families took them to the hospital.” He added that it looked like the young men had a brawl but nothing can be confirmed till the investigation is complete.
