RAWALPINDI:

The blood banks at Ahmed Medical Complex and Bilal Hospital were sealed on Tuesday due to their non-adherence to prescribed standard operating procedures of Punjab Blood Transfusion Authority.

The outlets were sealed after a team of health and district government officials led by provincial parliamentary secretary for health Khawaja Imran Nazir, DCO Sajid Zafar Dall and EDO Health Dr Khalid Randhawa visited the premises.

Nazir expressed annoyance over the unhygienic and deplorable conditions of the hospitals’ blood banks where blood technicians failed to answer questions regarding proper screening, storage and re-examining blood quality before transfusion.

The administration of Bilal Hospital did not satisfy the team about the queries regarding tests of five fatal ailments including HIV, Hepatitis B and C.

The health secretary warned that strict legal action would be taken against all those found involved in sale and purchase of infected blood.

Teams were constituted to check unregistered blood banks that have not been registered with the authority as yet and are also failing to fulfil the prescribed criteria.

The officials also expressed dissatisfaction over the casual attitude of the Ahmed Medical Complex administration for not paying attention towards following the SOPs.
