Adjournment motion: House debate sought on LoC violations

ISLAMABAD:

The Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) on Thursday called for a parliamentary debate on the latest Indian acts of aggression on the Line of Control (LoC) through an adjournment motion it presented in the lower house.

The clashes along the LoC and working boundary during Eidul Fitr have killed over a dozen people on the Pakistani side and left scores of others injured.

The intensity of the skirmishes has been described as unprecedented by military officials, according to reports.

On Thursday, PPP lawmakers including Shazia Marri, Imran Laghari, Dr Nafisa Shah and Aijaz Jakhrani, submitted an adjournment motion at the NA Secretariat against India’s violation of the LoC. It also condemned the aggression and called upon the government to raise the issue at international forums.

According to the Rules of Procedure and Conduct of Business in the National Assembly 2007, “a motion for an adjournment of the business of the house for the purpose of discussion on a definite matter of an urgent public importance may be made with the consent of the speaker.”

The motion said that firing by Indian forces has increased tension in Pak-India relations and that the situation might get worse if things are not addressed. In addition to it, the motion asked for a debate over the issue in the lower house.

PPP warns Sheikh Rashid

The PPP took exception to the statements issued by Awami Muslim League [AML] chief Sheikh Rashid Ahmed against its leadership and warned him against using derogatory language.

Sheikh Rashid had said that PPP Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari was still a child and his statements must not be taken seriously.

A statement issued by Senator Saeed Ghani condemned the statements of Sheikh Rashid and warned him saying “the PPP knows really well how to silence such people” who are known as symbols of “betrayal”.
