Increasing trend: 1,630 suicide attempts reported in 2013

As many as 67 people committed suicide and 1,630 have attempted it in Faisalabad in 2013, a 17 per cent increase over the previous year.


According to police and hospital records, 1,386 suicide attempts were reported in 2012 in the city. Fifty-seven people had died.

Most of the suicides followed domestic disputes, frustration with unemployment, failure in examination and rejection proposals.

Most of the people who attempted were between 15 and 20 years old.

Sources at Allied Hospital, the Divisional Headquarters Hospital (DHQ), General Hospital, Ghulam Muhammadabad, General Hospital, Samanabad and the Tehsil Headquarters Hospitals (THQ) said on bad days 8 to 10 people who attempt suicide were brought to the hospitals.

Talking to The Express Tribune, University of Agriculture, Faisalabad’s Dean of Faculty of Social Sciences Prof Zafar Iqbal said there was an urgent need to address the issues and raise public awareness to stop the trend.
