FAISALABAD:

“Pakistan’s forest cover needs to increase to fight climate changes and to cope with increasing pollution,” Government College University Faisalabad (GCUF) Vice Chancellor Dr Zakir Hussain said on Wednesday.

He was addressing the inaugural ceremony of the plantation campaign at the new campus.

Dr Hussain said that the increase in forests was essential to fight climate change effects, which were playing havoc as melting glaciers and damage to the ozone layer.

He said Pakistan was blessed to have four seasons and a variety of ecological systems. He regretted that green areas were being converted into residential settlements as the population grew.

He urged teachers and students to participate in the plantation drive.

Answering a question, he said the construction work on the new campus was in full swing and would be completed soon.

“We have ensured that the campus had sufficient green areas.”

Ali Hassan, founder of a non-government organisation called Drakht Lagao (plant a tree), said that the organisation had provided 1,000 plants to the GCUF. He said his NGO was committed to promoting plantation in the city. He said awareness about importance of tress was being created among citizens.

Earlier, while presiding over a seminar on quality and accreditation awareness at the university, the VC stressed the need for quality education.

The seminar was organised by the university’s Institute of Food Science, Nutrition and Home Economics.

Dr Hussain said that GCUF was making sure that students were provided with the best of education. He said the university had more than 300 PhDs.

Dr Naureen Aziz Qureshi, the Faculty of Science and Technology dean, said that the GCUF had emerged as the fifth best university in the Higher Education Commission rankings.

Naseer Alim, the National Agriculture Education Accreditation Council secretary, talked about the advantages and process of getting accreditation by the council.

He said the HEC had taken several initiatives to improve both access to and quality of higher education. The establishment of the accreditation councils was also a step towards improving education quality.
