KARACHI: A division bench of the Supreme Court directed the management of the Pakistan Steel Mills (PSM) on Thursday to pay a retired officer by August 31.

Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry and Justice Sarmad Jalal Osmany passed these orders on an application seeking contempt proceedings against the management.

The petitioner, Rana Muhammad Siddique, stated that he worked as an assistant deputy manager in 2002, when he was removed from service. He filed a case with the Federal Services Tribunal, which ordered his reinstatement in 2006 with direction to pay all the arrears.

He maintained that upon his retirement in 2008, the management deducted Rs1,100,000 from his dues for the period of four years during which he was suspended. He stated that the Sindh High Court also directed the management to pay him in full, but this was challenged in the Supreme Court by the management.

The apex court, however, also dismissed the PSM’s appeal with orders that they needed to pay him. But the order was not implemented. He asked the court to initiate contempt proceedings against the PSM for willfully defying the court’s orders.

On Thursday, an officer appearing for the PSM management tendered an unconditional apology and undertook to implement the court’s orders.
