KARACHI:

To resolve the controversy over the appointment of its vice chancellor, the Federal University of Arts, Science and Technology will hold the senate meeting on Saturday.

This was announced immediately after a press conference by the faculty members, led by the teachers association’s president, Prof Dr Iftikhar Ahmed Tahiri.

The teachers warned of protesting against unnecessary delay in appointment of the VC and intervention of the Higher Education Commission’s chairperson, Dr Javaid Laghari. It was also announced that classes will not take place due to the meeting.

The senate meeting, which had earlier nominated three names to the President for the VC post on July 29, will review how to proceed after Laghari opposed all three candidates.

The HEC chairperson has questioned the competency of all three nominees who were proposed by a committee headed by Leghari himself. He apologised for not being able to attend the meeting due to his busy schedule. An official of the education commission will attend it on his behalf.
