KARACHI: Public transporters appeared loathe to pass on the decrease in fuel prices to the people in the form of a reduction in transportation fares. The Karachi Transport Ittehad (KTI) general secretary Mahmood Afridi termed the multiple decreases in fuel prices during the last 20 days as “ineffectual,” and claimed that transporters had not changed their fares since April 15, 2011, nearly 14 months before the recent reductions in fuel prices. The KTI general secretary added that transporters were already being financially squeezed, as prices of vehicle spare parts had gone up by nearly 50 per cent. The government, on July 1, slashed the per-litre price of petrol by Rs5.02 to Rs84.49, kerosene by Rs2.54 to Rs86.25, high speed diesel by Rs2.48 to Rs97.21, light diesel oil by Rs2.86 to Rs83.71 and high octane blending component by Rs6.44 to Rs106.88. CNG prices were also reduced by Rs4.20 per kg to Rs77.66 Sindh and Punjab.
