KARACHI:

A delegation of KMC officials left for Iran on Saturday to negotiate a deal which could result in a $2 million investment in a slaughterhouse.

Led by Municipal Commissioner Matanat Ali Khan, the three-member delegation will discuss details of a proposal by Iranian authorities to build a slaughterhouse for its own consumption.

“Iran needs beef,” said the veterinary executive director Mukhtar. “It is viable for them to import it from here. They can even import frozen sheep meat from here.”

The deal comes after a visit of Mashhad’s mayor to the city. Every year thousands of live cows are smuggled to Iran from Pakistan in absence of legal meat export.

Iran, which faces shortage of meat, has to import beef from countries as far as Brazil, said Mukhtar. “One kilogramme of meat when smuggled cost them Rs4000.”

Earlier in the day, Mashhad’s mayor Syed Muhammad Pezham visited the Landhi slaughterhouse where he was briefed on the updated facility.
