Matt Damon reveals wife Luciana underwent brain surgery before ‘Oppenheimer’s’ Oscar triumph

Luciana later surprised Damon by joining him at an after-party following her recovery

Matt Damon has revealed that his wife, Luciana Damon, underwent brain surgery after suffering a brain aneurysm just one week before the 2024 Academy Awards, where his film Oppenheimer dominated the ceremony.

In a new cover interview with GQ, the actor opened up about the frightening medical emergency and explained why the couple missed the 96th Academy Awards in March 2024. Despite the film securing several major awards that evening, Damon and his wife were unable to attend the ceremony because she was recovering from surgery.

The actor described the experience as a particularly difficult period for their family, although he was relieved to confirm that Luciana had made a full recovery.

“She is totally fine, thank God,” Damon said while recalling the incident.

However, the couple did eventually make an appearance during Oscar night. According to Damon, the after-party was the first evening Luciana felt well enough to get dressed and go out following her operation.

He explained that she remembered missing the celebrations when The Departed won Best Picture in 2007. Damon had been working on The Bourne Ultimatum at the time and watched the ceremony from home with his wife.

The actor recalled feeling excited when Martin Scorsese won Best Director and The Departed subsequently secured the night’s biggest award. He later regretted not attending the celebrations with the cast.

Remembering that experience, Luciana encouraged him to attend the Oppenheimer celebrations despite her recent surgery. Damon described her decision to join him as heroic and deeply meaningful.

Oppenheimer, directed by Christopher Nolan, won seven Academy Awards in 2024, including Best Picture, Best Director and acting honours for Cillian Murphy and Robert Downey Jr.

Damon also reflected on his career in the interview, explaining that making films with lasting appeal matters more to him than winning awards.
