Keanu Reeves officially returns as John Wick in animated prequel movie

Shannon Tindle will direct the project, with Ryan and Kaz Firpo writing the screenplay

Keanu Reeves is officially returning as John Wick, closing a deal to reprise his role in Lionsgate’s upcoming animated prequel film centred on the legendary assassin.

According to Variety, the project will explore an important chapter in Wick’s history, focusing on the Impossible Task that allowed him to leave his former life behind and pursue a future with his wife, Helen.

The story follows a younger Wick as he attempts to eliminate all his rivals in a single night to fulfil his obligation to the High Table. Completing the seemingly impossible mission would free him from his commitment to the powerful organisation and allow him to be with the woman he loves.

Animation veteran Shannon Tindle has been appointed to direct the feature, working from a screenplay written by Ryan and Kaz Firpo. Tindle is known for directing Netflix’s Ultraman: Rising and working on Kubo and the Two Strings.

Several familiar names from the franchise are also involved in the production. Thunder Road’s Basil Iwanyk and Erica Lee will produce alongside Chad Stahelski of 87Eleven Entertainment and Reeves. Point Grey is also attached to the project.

The animated film was previously announced in 2025, with Lionsgate expressing excitement about exploring the Impossible Task through animation. The studio described the storyline as one that fans have particularly wanted to see.

The project forms part of Lionsgate’s continued expansion of the John Wick franchise, which has generated more than $1 billion worldwide across its five films, including the Ana de Armas-led spin-off Ballerina.

Alongside the animated prequel, a fifth live-action John Wick instalment is in development. A separate project centred on Donnie Yen’s character, Caine, is also planned.

However, a release date and further casting details for the animated feature have yet to be announced.
