Andrew Garfield and Owen Thiele were among the passengers on a Delta flight that was diverted to Albuquerque after a smoky odour was reported inside the aircraft.

Delta Flight 958 was travelling from Los Angeles to New York City on September 9 when it made an emergency landing in Albuquerque. The airline said the flight was diverted because of a smoky odour, adding that the aircraft landed safely and passengers were later accommodated on other flights.

Thiele documented the unexpected stopover on Instagram, revealing that several familiar faces were also aboard the flight. Alongside Garfield and Thiele, passengers included actor Nick Robinson, singer Mark Ambor and Love Island USA star Dylan Wrona.

The Adults actor shared updates throughout the ordeal, including a photo from inside the aircraft and a selfie with some of his fellow passengers. He later joked that he had “made friends in the airport” after the group spent time together during the lengthy delay.

The passengers eventually left the airport and headed to Dave & Buster’s together. Thiele shared that he travelled with nine people he had not previously met, turning the unexpected diversion into an unusual group outing.

The journey back to New York also faced complications after the passengers were told that a replacement aircraft might have fewer seats. Thiele documented their attempts to get food before returning through airport security.

The group eventually boarded another plane and reached New York. Thiele later revealed that he was added to a group chat with some of the people he met during the delay.

Wrona also shared a selfie with Garfield from the airport, captioning the post, “Our plane is here to save us.”

Delta confirmed the diversion in a statement, saying the aircraft landed uneventfully.
