When science learns to smile

Recently, while delivering a lecture at a science club, I found myself discussing something that does not usually appear in the conventional image of a science classroom: humour. We are accustomed to imagining science as a serious enterprise i.e. labs, equations, instruments, measurements and researchers wearing appropriately grave expressions. Humour, by contrast, is placed in the domain of entertainment and literature. Yet the two are not as distant as they appear.

Science begins with a question. Humour often does too. A scientist looks at an ordinary phenomenon and asks why it behaves as it does. A humorist looks at ordinary human behaviour and asks why we behave as though something absurd were perfectly normal. Both require observation, imagination and the willingness to challenge accepted assumptions. The relationship between scientific curiosity and humour was one of the central themes of my lecture.

Unfortunately, generations of students have been taught to associate intellectual seriousness with intellectual difficulty. Physics must appear frightening, chemistry complicated and mathematics almost deliberately unfriendly. The more incomprehensible the explanation, the more "scientific" it seems. This is a serious educational mistake.

Science itself is full of ideas stranger than fiction. Matter may behave as both particle and wave. Time is not absolute. Two quantum systems may display correlations across enormous distances. The atoms in our bodies originated in ancient stars. There is nothing inherently dull about such concepts; what often makes them dull is the manner in which we teach them. Humour can help.

Imagine teaching heat transfer by saying that heat, rather like certain government directives, tends to move from a higher level to a lower one. The student may smile, but the scientific principle is remembered. A chemical bond can be explained through relationships; entropy through the mysterious disorder that returns to a freshly cleaned room; relativity through the very different experience of an hour in an examination hall and an hour spent with friends.

Such analogies are not substitutes for equations. They are gateways to them.

The purpose of humorous science is not to make fun of science but to make it approachable. Humour reduces anxiety, creates attention and makes abstract ideas memorable. More importantly, it encourages students to ask questions. A classroom in which students are afraid of appearing foolish is a classroom in which scientific thinking is already being suppressed. The source essay from which my lecture developed similarly argues that humour can make knowledge memorable while encouraging the courage to question.

Urdu has a rich tradition of sophisticated humour, but science has rarely become a sustained subject within it. English science communication shows how humour can illuminate complex ideas, as seen in the work of George Gamow, Richard Feynman and Randall Munroe. Rather than imitate English models, Urdu should develop its own culturally rooted scientific humour through cartoons, podcasts, children's stories, columns and imaginative pieces like a Diary of an Electron or Letters from Entropy.

This matters beyond entertainment. Pakistan needs scientific literacy. Climate change, public health, AI, energy, water scarcity and environmental degradation all require citizens who can evaluate evidence and distinguish scientific reasoning from misinformation. Science cannot remain locked inside journals and labs.

Universities and science clubs can play an important role. Students should learn not only how to conduct research but how to explain it. Teachers should be encouraged to use analogy, storytelling and appropriate humour. Newspapers and digital platforms should create greater space for accessible science writing in Urdu and regional languages.

Science describes the world through evidence; literature interprets human experience through language. Humour allows the two to meet without ceremony.

At the end of my lecture, I returned to a simple thought: if science teaches us to question the universe, perhaps humour teaches us not to take our own certainty too seriously.

A society that continues to ask questions remains intellectually alive. And sometimes, the first sign of that life is a smile.
