Reported 12TB Steam leak contains early builds and files from games released or uploaded between 2003 and 2013

A reported 12 terabyte leak involving Steam has exposed internal builds and files from games uploaded to Valve’s PC gaming platform between 2003 and 2013.

According to Valve news accounts on social media, the leaked material includes builds from Valve franchises such as Portal and Half-Life, alongside files connected to games from other major publishers.

Fans have so far identified material related to Call of Duty, Resident Evil, Sonic the Hedgehog, Mirror’s Edge, Batman: Arkham Asylum, Dragon Age: Origins and Spore.

The leak also contains early and unused material from Valve games. Findings include unused maps, weapon concepts, character designs and gameplay footage.

One leaked Portal 2 build features a “bullet time” mechanic that slowed the game while players solved puzzles. Fans have also discovered cut Cave Johnson Companion Cube dialogue.

Users examining the files claim the incident may not have involved conventional hacking. The files were reportedly downloaded from a publicly available website that previously served as Valve’s storage solution before the company moved to a more secure system. Valve has not responded to a request for comment.

Another discovery concerns F-Stop, an unreleased game believed to have been set in the Portal universe. Early models and concepts suggest it may have been a version of Portal 2 built around camera-based mechanics.

The leak has also produced material connected to Half-Life 2: Episode 3, the cancelled continuation of the series.

Valve announced the project in 2006 before cancelling it several years later. The leaked files reportedly reference planned elements including an ice gun and a “Weaponizer” gun.

The impact on other games varies depending on what material was uploaded to Steam during the period.

Some games have only sparse assets, while others reportedly contain playable beta builds, including Sonic the Hedgehog.
