Tim Hortons' Harry Potter menu sparks backlash before magical launch
New menu arrives August 12 as supporters embrace nostalgia while critics question partnership tied to franchise

Tim Hortons has found itself at the centre of a fresh cultural debate after unveiling a Harry Potter themed menu and merchandise collaboration to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the first Harry Potter film. While many fans welcomed the nostalgic promotion, others criticised the Canadian coffee chain for partnering with a franchise whose creator, JK Rowling, remains a deeply divisive figure because of her views on transgender issues.
The limited time campaign, announced this week, is scheduled to launch on August 12 across participating Tim Hortons locations. It includes Hogwarts House inspired doughnuts, Golden Snitch Timbits, themed beverages, collectible merchandise and limited edition packaging. The company is also planning a Harry Potter trivia night and a competition giving Tims Rewards members the chance to win a VIP experience in London.
Shortly after the announcement, social media platforms filled with mixed reactions. Many longtime Harry Potter fans expressed excitement about collecting the themed items and revisiting a franchise that has remained popular for more than two decades. Others, however, said they would avoid the promotion, arguing they could not separate the Harry Potter brand from Rowling's public comments on sex and gender.

Tim Hortons addressed the criticism in a statement, explaining that the collaboration with Warner Bros Discovery Global Consumer Products was designed to celebrate one of the world's most recognisable entertainment franchises and mark the milestone anniversary of the first film. The company said the promotion was intended to bring a sense of fun and nostalgia to customers rather than make a political statement.
Despite that explanation, LGBTQ+ advocacy organisation Egale Canada criticised the campaign, saying collaborations connected to the Harry Potter brand can be upsetting for transgender and gender diverse communities. The organisation argued that continued commercial partnerships contribute to the visibility and financial success of a franchise that remains closely associated with Rowling, whose comments have been widely criticised by LGBTQ+ groups over several years.
Rowling has consistently defended her position, saying she supports transgender rights while maintaining her views on biological sex and gender. Her comments have prompted an ongoing international debate and have also led to public disagreements with several stars from the Harry Potter film series. Actors Daniel Radcliffe and Emma Watson have both publicly expressed support for transgender rights and distanced themselves from Rowling's views.
The online response to the Tim Hortons campaign reflected that wider divide. Some commenters praised the promotion as a fun celebration of a beloved fantasy series and said they planned to purchase the themed food and merchandise.

Others announced they would boycott the chain, arguing the collaboration conflicted with values of inclusion and support for transgender communities. One self identified transgender Tim Hortons employee also shared disappointment online, saying the campaign felt personally hurtful.
The differing reactions highlight how major entertainment brands continue to face scrutiny over partnerships involving culturally influential but controversial figures. For Tim Hortons, what was intended as an anniversary celebration has instead become another example of how nostalgia, popular culture and social issues can quickly collide.
With the August 12 launch approaching, the collaboration is likely to attract both enthusiastic customers eager to experience the magical themed menu and critics who believe companies should carefully consider the wider implications of commercial partnerships.
