Trump’s new AI-powered website says president lost 2020 election

America.gov is designed to provide information about the US government using answers generated from government sources

The Trump administration’s newly launched AI-powered government website, America.gov, initially gave answers that contradicted several public claims made by President Donald Trump, including his repeated statements about the 2020 presidential election.

Launched on September 29, the website is designed to provide Americans with information about government services using artificial intelligence. The platform says its answers are sourced from official government information and brings together information from thousands of federal websites.

When asked who won the 2020 presidential election, the website initially stated that Joe Biden won and that official federal sources did not show widespread fraud had changed the outcome. The answer also acknowledged that isolated election crimes had occurred and been prosecuted.

Trump lost the 2020 election to Biden and has continued to claim that the result was stolen through widespread fraud. However, repeated audits, recounts and court proceedings did not establish widespread fraud that changed the result. The Trump administration itself described the 2020 election as secure at the time.

The AI website subsequently changed how it handled the question. When asked again about the 2020 election, it responded that it could not answer “political questions”. The same response reportedly appeared when users asked about Trump’s impeachments and felony convictions.

America.gov also initially provided answers that conflicted with other statements from Trump. Asked about a possible 2028 presidential campaign, the site cited the 22nd Amendment’s two-term limit and noted that Trump had already been elected in 2016 and 2024. It also identified the Pentagon as the headquarters of the Department of Defense, despite Trump’s efforts to promote the name “Department of War”.

The launch comes as the administration promotes artificial intelligence as a central part of its technology agenda. America.gov is intended to eventually allow users to complete government-related tasks, with additional functions expected to be introduced as the platform develops.
