Michael Pennington, the British actor best known for playing Moff Jerjerrod in Star Wars: Episode VI – Return of the Jedi, has died at the age of 82, according to a report by The Telegraph.

Pennington passed away on Sunday, with no cause of death disclosed. Born in Cambridge in 1943, he built a long and respected career across theatre, television, and film, becoming one of Britain’s most accomplished classical actors.

While widely recognised internationally for his role in Star Wars, Pennington was primarily celebrated for his extensive stage work with the Royal Shakespeare Company. His theatre credits included major productions such as Hamlet, King Lear, Macbeth, and Richard II, establishing him as a leading Shakespearean performer of his generation.

In 1986, he co-founded the English Shakespeare Company with Michael Bogdanov, serving as joint artistic director and helping bring modern interpretations of Shakespeare to wider audiences. The company earned critical acclaim for its innovative approach and touring productions.

Beyond theatre, Pennington appeared in more than 70 screen roles across film and television. His credits include The Iron Lady (2011), The Tudors, Waking the Dead, and Silent Witness. His final credited role came in 2022.

Despite his extensive body of work, Pennington often acknowledged the lasting attention from Star Wars, where he portrayed the Death Star commander overseeing construction of the Empire’s superweapon.

Pennington also authored several books on acting and directing, contributing to his reputation as both a performer and scholar. His death marks the loss of a major figure in British theatre and screen acting.
