Project Hail Mary has delivered a massive box office debut, becoming the biggest opening of 2026 and a record-breaker for Amazon MGM Studios.

The sci-fi film, starring Ryan Gosling, earned around $80.5–$80.6 million domestically in its opening weekend, far exceeding earlier projections and marking the studio’s highest debut ever.

Internationally, the film added another $60.4 million across more than 80 markets, bringing its global opening total to roughly $141 million.

The strong performance makes Project Hail Mary one of the most successful non-franchise openings in recent years, joining titles like Oppenheimer as rare original films to surpass major box office expectations.

Directed by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, the film follows a science teacher who wakes up alone on a spaceship with a mission to save Earth. The movie is based on the novel by Andy Weir and represents one of Amazon’s biggest theatrical bets to date.

The success is being seen as a major turning point for Amazon MGM’s theatrical strategy, proving the company can compete with traditional Hollywood studios in delivering blockbuster hits.

With strong audience reception and global momentum, Project Hail Mary is expected to continue performing well in the coming weeks, potentially becoming one of the year’s biggest films.
