'The Testaments' ending explained: Finale sets up major rebellion against Gilead ahead of Season 2
Hulu announced the renewal for the 'Handmaid's Tale' spinoff on May 20, just ahead of its season 1 finale

The season finale of The Testaments delivered a bleak ending for several characters while laying the groundwork for a larger rebellion against Gilead.
Episode 10, titled “Secateurs”, followed the fallout from Becka killing her abusive father before being taken by the Eyes. Despite the danger surrounding her case, several characters, including the Plums and Aunt Lydia, attempted to save her from punishment.
Agnes pushed Commander Weston, who oversees the Eyes, to intervene by revealing she had also been a victim of Doctor Grove. Weston eventually secured Becka’s temporary release under surveillance while Aunt Lydia and Aunt Vidala coached Becka and her mother on a revised account of events.
Becka’s mother ultimately accepted responsibility to protect her daughter. The decision saved Becka but led to devastating consequences, including her mother’s execution. Agnes also sacrificed her own future after Weston ended their engagement to distance himself from the scandal.
The finale contrasted Becka’s forced marriage to Garth with the execution, reinforcing the harsh realities of life inside Gilead. Although Garth agreed to marry Becka to shield her from further punishment, the ceremony and aftermath reflected the emotional damage caused by the regime.
Meanwhile, Daisy continued working secretly with the resistance group Mayday. After reconnecting with June, Daisy chose to remain inside Gilead to help dismantle the regime from within.
The episode concluded with Daisy revealing to Agnes that June is her mother, while Aunt Lydia hinted she would continue protecting the girls. Outside Gilead, June received a hidden message confirming Daisy intended to continue the fight against the state from inside its borders.
The Testaments has officially been renewed for a second season. Hulu announced the renewal for the Handmaid's Tale spinoff on May 20, 2026, just ahead of its season 1 finale.
