YouTuber Jacksepticeye has criticised YouTube’s moderation policies after one video in his playthrough series of Resident Evil Requiem was age-restricted while others remained unrestricted.

The content creator raised the issue in a video discussing YouTube’s moderation system. Resident Evil Requiem is the latest entry in Capcom’s long-running horror franchise and features violent gameplay involving combat with zombies and other enemies.

According to Jacksepticeye, only the fourth video in his five-part playthrough series received an age restriction from the platform.

Age-restricted videos require viewers to sign in to verify their age before watching and are often subject to limited advertising, which can reduce overall viewership.

The platform initially informed the creator that the restriction had been applied because of “inappropriate language”. YouTube stated that the video contained “moderate profanity in the title or thumbnail”, which could also include swearing throughout the video.

Jacksepticeye questioned the explanation, saying the video’s title and thumbnail did not contain profanity and that the language used during the video was consistent with the rest of the series.

After contacting a representative, YouTube later confirmed that the restriction would remain in place but cited a different reason.

The platform said the video breached its Community Guidelines due to “violent or graphic visuals, certain medical procedures, animal abuse, or some cases of gaming and scripted violence.”

The creator said the situation highlighted what he described as inconsistent moderation decisions on the platform. “What’s really bothering me about this is the inconsistency across the board,” he said.

“Telling me that it’s swearing, telling me that it’s graphic violence. But what’s worse is that everyone’s playing the same game… but a lot of other people aren’t getting age-restricted for the same thing.”

The restricted video had received around 1.4 million views at the time he discussed the issue. Jacksepticeye said the figure was still “fantastic” for a later entry in a Let’s Play series.
