Nathan Lane calls Chalamet and McConaughey ‘terribly unfunny’
Nathan Lane ridicules Timothée Chalamet and Matthew McConaughey over viral town hall comments

Nathan Lane has sparked fresh controversy after delivering a blunt and highly sarcastic critique of Timothée Chalamet and Matthew McConaughey during a television appearance.
Lane made the remarks while appearing on The View, where the conversation turned to the backlash surrounding comments Chalamet made about opera and ballet during a public town hall discussion with McConaughey. The veteran stage and screen actor did not hold back as he reacted to the controversy.
“Oh, what a schmuck,” Lane said when the topic first came up. As the discussion continued, he added that Chalamet’s remarks were “kind of kaleidoscopic in its stupidity and insensitivity, and yet strangely telling about where we are in this country.”
Lane also defended the lasting importance of classical performance arts while joking about the longevity of cultural tastes. “First of all, one should remember, people will be going to see Swan Lake and La Traviata long after someone at a dinner party says, ‘Who was Timothée Chalamet?’ It’s the show business circle of life.”
The actor then questioned why the discussion between the two Hollywood stars happened in the first place. “The bigger question is, why was there a town hall meeting with Matthew McConaughey and Timothée Chalamet? Who deemed this meeting of the minds necessary?”
Lane continued the criticism while referencing Chalamet’s Oscar nominated film Marty Supreme, which follows a competitive table tennis player. “I’ve got news for Timmy. If you think nobody cares about opera and ballet, I can’t tell you how much we don’t care about ping pong.”
He finished the segment with another sarcastic jab aimed at both actors, suggesting their attempt at humour may have backfired. “This may just be a tragic case of terribly unfunny people trying to be funny, which always ends in disaster.”
The comments quickly drew attention online as the debate around Chalamet’s original remarks continued across entertainment circles. Representatives for both Chalamet and McConaughey were contacted for comment following Lane’s remarks.
