Grey’s Anatomy has paid tribute to the late Eric Dane with a montage celebrating his portrayal of Dr Mark “McSteamy” Sloan.

Dane, who appeared on the medical drama for seven seasons, died last week following a battle with ALS. In Thursday’s episode, the series honoured the actor with a compilation of his moments on the show, set to Chasing Cars. The version featured was a cover performed by Tommee Profitt & Fleuries.

Chasing Cars, originally by Snow Patrol, has longstanding significance for viewers of Grey’s Anatomy, having featured prominently in the season 2 finale storyline involving Denny and Izzie. The song has returned in several episodes over the years.

Dane’s family confirmed his death in a statement, saying he “spent his final days surrounded by dear friends, his devoted wife, and his two beautiful daughters, Billie and Georgia, who were the center of his world.”

The statement continued: “Throughout his journey with ALS, Eric became a passionate advocate for awareness and research, determined to make a difference for others facing the same fight. He will be deeply missed, and lovingly remembered always. Eric adored his fans and is forever grateful for the outpouring of love and support he’s received. The family has asked for privacy as they navigate this impossible time.”

Following the announcement, several of Dane’s former co-stars shared tributes. Patrick Dempsey said on The Chris Evans Breakfast Show: “I want to just remember him in that spirit because any time he was on set, he brought so much fun to it. He had a great sense of humor. He was easy to work with, we got along instantly.”

Katherine Heigl also posted a statement on Instagram reflecting on her grief and offering support to Dane’s family.
