‘Aegon’s Conquest’ unveiled as first Game of Thrones film exploring rise of Westeros under dragon rule
Beau Willimon is writing the screenplay as Warner Bros targets a 2027 theatrical release for the fantasy film updates

The upcoming Game of Thrones film has officially been given the working title Game of Thrones Aegon’s Conquest, marking a major expansion of the franchise into theatrical storytelling beyond television.
The announcement was made during Warner Bros CinemaCon presentation in Las Vegas, where the studio outlined its long term slate stretching into 2027 and beyond. While the title may still evolve during development, it confirms the central focus of the project on Aegon I Targaryen, the legendary conqueror from George R R Martin’s world of Westeros.
The film will chart the origins of the Targaryen dynasty’s rise to power, long before the events of Game of Thrones. Aegon I is best known in the lore for uniting the fractured kingdoms of Westeros through military conquest, using dragon power to establish control over the continent. His reign laid the foundation for the Iron Throne, forged from the weapons of defeated enemies, becoming one of the most enduring symbols in the franchise’s mythology.
According to information shared at CinemaCon, the project will be written by Beau Willimon, best known for his work on House of Cards and Andor. His involvement signals a focus on political complexity alongside the large scale fantasy elements that define the franchise.
The film is part of Warner Bros and HBO’s broader strategy to expand the Game of Thrones universe, which already includes House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms. Both series continue to explore different historical eras of Westeros, with House of the Dragon set to continue its run with future seasons.
While casting details and production timelines remain unconfirmed, the studio has positioned the project as one of its key upcoming fantasy releases. It joins a wider slate of major titles planned for the late 2020s as Warner Bros continues to build out franchise driven theatrical content.
Aegon’s Conquest is expected to deepen the franchise’s exploration of Targaryen history, focusing on the political ambition, warfare and legacy building that shaped the Seven Kingdoms long before the original series began.
