A wave of online speculation about a supposed leak for The Winds of Winter has been firmly dismissed after George R R Martin’s publisher confirmed that the claims circulating on social media are false.

The rumours began over the weekend when an anonymous post shared what appeared to be a screenshot suggesting the long awaited sixth book in the A Song of Ice and Fire series could be released later this year, with an announcement allegedly imminent. The post quickly gained traction across platforms including X, where fans of the Game of Thrones universe debated whether it could be genuine.

The story spread further as smaller entertainment outlets and fan accounts amplified the claim, fuelling renewed discussion about the status of the long delayed novel. However, the speculation was quickly addressed by Bantam Books, the US publisher of Martin’s fantasy series.

A representative for Bantam Books told Entertainment Weekly that the online chatter regarding a supposed leak is false, directly contradicting the viral claims. The statement effectively shut down the rumours, which had no verified sourcing or official confirmation.

The Winds of Winter has been in development for many years, with readers last receiving a mainline instalment of the series in 2011 with A Dance With Dragons. The earlier books, including A Game of Thrones, A Clash of Kings, A Storm of Swords and A Feast for Crows, established one of the most influential fantasy narratives in modern literature.

George R R Martin has periodically addressed progress on the book through public appearances and blog updates, repeatedly noting that writing continues but without a confirmed completion date. He has also acknowledged the challenges of balancing multiple creative projects across television, publishing and other media.

The renewed attention highlights the ongoing anticipation surrounding the novel, which remains one of the most discussed unfinished books in contemporary fiction. The situation also reflects how quickly unverified information can spread within fan communities, particularly around high profile franchises such as Game of Thrones.

Alongside the continued wait for the next book, the television universe based on Martin’s work continues to expand through projects like House of the Dragon and A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, keeping interest in Westeros at a sustained high level.

For now, however, there is no confirmed release timeline for The Winds of Winter, and the publisher’s statement makes clear that the recent viral leak claims should not be treated as accurate.
