Barbie Ferreira breaks silence on ‘Euphoria’ exit and says ‘I left to do my thing rather than be a second thought’
Actress discusses career shift after leaving HBO drama and confirms decision followed long creative discussions

Barbie Ferreira has addressed her departure from HBO’s Euphoria, offering new insight into why she stepped away from the hit series after its second season.
The actress, who played Kat Hernandez in the show’s first two seasons, reflected on her exit during a recent appearance on the Not Skinny But Not Fat podcast with Amanda Hirsch. Ferreira said the decision was the result of an extended creative process rather than any behind the scenes conflict, pushing back on online speculation that surrounded her 2022 exit.
She explained that conversations about Kat’s storyline had been ongoing for some time, but both she and the creative team ultimately struggled to find a clear direction for the character. Ferreira described the process as gradual and collaborative, stating that it became clear the role was no longer evolving in a way that felt meaningful for her as an actor.
The actress emphasised that she still valued her time on the show and appreciated the opportunity it gave her early in her career. However, she said she wanted to pursue work that allowed her to take on more active and creatively demanding roles. Ferreira noted that she was interested in indie films and projects where she could explore different characters in greater depth rather than remain in what she described as a limited on screen presence.
She also addressed assumptions that her exit was dramatic, clarifying that the reality was far more straightforward. Ferreira previously denied rumours of conflict in a separate interview and reiterated that her departure was not the result of any single incident or dispute.
Instead, she said the choice came from a desire to shape her career in a different direction, adding that she wanted to focus on acting opportunities where she felt more creatively engaged. She suggested that stepping away allowed both her and the show to move forward without forcing a storyline that was no longer developing.
Ferreira added that she respects actors who choose to remain in long running ensemble roles but felt personally drawn to smaller independent projects where she could experiment more freely. She described the decision as ultimately positive for her growth as an artist.
The discussion comes as Euphoria continues its long awaited third season, with returning cast members including Zendaya, Sydney Sweeney and Jacob Elordi. Ferreira confirmed she still watches the series and expressed interest in seeing how the story continues to evolve without her character.
