Riot Games announces layoffs impacting 2XKO development team
Riot Games reduced 2XKO staff after admitting project momentum lagged

Riot Games has confirmed layoffs affecting staff working on its fighting game 2XKO, citing a need to refocus development priorities and long-term competitive plans.
According to a company blog post published on February 9, Riot Games said the project’s current momentum has not reached a level that justifies maintaining the existing team size. As a result, the developer has reduced the number of employees assigned to the title, though it did not disclose how many roles were affected.
Despite the workforce reduction, Riot Games stated it remains committed to improving 2XKO and addressing feedback raised by the community. The company also confirmed that its esports initiatives tied to the game will continue as planned.
Tom Cannon, executive producer of 2XKO, said the title’s 2026 Competitive Series will proceed without changes, adding that Riot Games will continue collaborating with tournament organisers and local fighting game communities to support existing events.
2XKO officially launched worldwide on January 20, 2026. The two-versus-two fighting game features characters from the League of Legends universe and recently had its competitive calendar announced, outlining appearances at several major events throughout the year.
Riot Games said employees affected by the layoffs will be offered the opportunity to explore alternative roles within the company. Those departing will receive six months of notice pay along with severance packages.
Cannon described the decision as a shift in operational strategy rather than a reflection of individual performance, stating that the restructuring is intended to create a more sustainable development path for the game.
The announcement comes amid continued workforce reductions across the esports industry. Over the past year, several organisations have implemented layoffs, including tournament organiser ESL FACEIT Group in October and North American esports organisation 100 Thieves in September 2025.
