Meghan Trainor defends decision to welcome third child via surrogate amid public criticism
Singer says surrogacy was safest medical option for growing family & praises surrogate

Meghan Trainor is speaking out in defense of her decision to welcome her third child via surrogate, calling the choice both “valid” and deeply personal.
In an interview with People published Wednesday, the Grammy-winning singer addressed criticism surrounding the arrival of her newborn daughter, Mikey Moon Trainor, whom she and husband Daryl Sabara welcomed through a gestational carrier over the weekend.
“Surrogacy is just another beautiful way to build a family,” Trainor, 32, told the outlet. “It’s not something to whisper about or judge.” She added that the process is “rooted in trust, science, love, and teamwork,” emphasizing that “every family’s journey looks different, and all of them are extremely valid.”
Trainor noted that surrogacy was not initially her or Sabara’s first choice. However, after extensive discussions with medical professionals, the couple determined it was the safest option for expanding their family. They are also parents to sons Riley, 4, and Barry, 2.
“We had endless conversations with our doctors on this journey, and this was the safest way for us to be able to continue growing our family,” Trainor said, expressing gratitude for the medical guidance she received.
The singer also publicly thanked her surrogate, describing her as “selfless, strong and loving.” Trainor told People that she and the surrogate remained closely connected throughout the pregnancy and regularly checked in with one another.
“She gave us the greatest gift of our lives,” Trainor said, adding that she remains grateful for the care shown to her daughter.
On Tuesday, Trainor shared hospital photos on Instagram announcing Mikey’s birth, which took place on Jan. 18, 2026. In the caption, she praised the “incredible, superwoman surrogate” who helped bring their daughter into the world and said the family is “over the moon in love.”
Trainor also revealed that her sons were involved in choosing their sister’s middle name and are excited to welcome her home.
The decision to use a gestational carrier follows health challenges Trainor experienced during her previous pregnancies. She has previously spoken about a traumatic first birth via C-section, which she detailed in her 2023 book Dear Mama, writing that the experience led to PTSD. During her second pregnancy, she developed gestational diabetes.
Trainor and Sabara, who married in 2018 after meeting in 2016, have not publicly identified the surrogate. The couple said they plan to step back from the spotlight to focus on family time following Mikey’s arrival.
