LAHORE:

A man was shot dead and another injured in a robbery on Fasih Road in Lytton Road police jurisdiction on Thursday, shortly after the victims had bought bonds from the State Bank of Pakistan.

Sheikh Saadat Ali, 55, and Malik Waheed, resident of Samanabad, were attacked at around 10 am near Miani Sahib graveyard on their motorcycle, by two men on another motorbike, on their way back from the State Bank.

Bystanders said Saadat had been hit in the back and Waheed in the leg. Saadat was pronounced dead upon arrival at Mayo Hospital. Waheed is still in critical condition.

Relatives of the two men told reporters at the hospital that they had bonds of Rs10 million on them. Muhammad Nawaz, who owns a shop near the scene of the attack, said that when bystanders approached Waheed, he said that the robbers had stolen bonds worth Rs10 million and they should call his father.

However, police officials said that in the complaint made by Waheed’s father Ghulam Mustafa for the registration of an FIR, there was no mention of the value of bonds stolen.

The case was one of dacoity and murder, under Sections 302 and 394 of the Pakistan Penal Code.

DSP Malik Muhammad Hussain said that Rs350,000 was the maximum amount of bonds that could be bought at one time, so he did not believe that Rs10 million worth of bonds had been stolen.

Civil Lines SP (Investigations) Captain (r) Malik Liaqat said that Waheed was in no position to make a statement to the police, but they were hoping he would provide leads to the killers. He admitted the police were dependent on him, as they had been unable to find witnesses to describe the attackers.

He too did not believe that bonds worth Rs10 million had been stolen, saying members of Waheed’s family had made contradictory statements about the amount and type of money they were carrying.
