A small twin-engine aircraft made an emergency landing on Interstate 95 in Brevard County on Monday evening, hitting a vehicle and briefly shutting down southbound traffic during the busy rush-hour commute, according to officials.

The Beechcraft 55 aircraft came down around 5:45pm near mile marker 201 in Cocoa after the pilot attempted to land on the highway. Florida Highway Patrol said the plane collided with a Toyota Camry traveling in the southbound lanes.

The driver of the Camry, a 57-year-old woman, was taken to Viera Hospital with minor injuries. The two men aboard the aircraft, a 27-year-old pilot from Orlando and a 27-year-old passenger from Temple Terrace, were not hurt.

Investigators have not yet determined what forced the emergency landing. FHP said the FAA will lead the investigation into what went wrong before the plane touched down on the roadway.

Traffic in the area was backed up for several miles, but troopers confirmed the interstate was fully cleared shortly before 9pm.

This incident marked the second small-plane emergency landing in Central Florida on the same day. Earlier Monday afternoon, another aircraft landed on a roadway near DeLand High School in Volusia County. Both occupants of that plane were injured and transported to the hospital.
