Freya Allan, known for her role as Ciri in Netflix’s The Witcher, says she briefly contemplated leaving the series after learning that Henry Cavill would no longer continue as Geralt of Rivia. Her comments were shared in a new interview with NME.

Cavill confirmed his departure in October 2022 after three seasons, with Liam Hemsworth stepping in as his replacement. Allan revealed she learned the news only one day before it became public, at a time when she was filming Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes. According to Allan, the announcement was emotionally difficult, especially given her long-running on-screen connection with Cavill.

Allan said that season 3 had already been challenging, and the thought of continuing without Cavill left her uncertain about her own place in the series. “I cried because I wanted to finish the show with the guy who played my adoptive father,” she told NME. She added that Cavill’s departure made her reflect for the first time on the idea of leaving The Witcher behind.

She ultimately chose to remain and complete Ciri’s narrative arc. After deciding to stay, Allan said she felt determined to fully embrace the experience: “Once I made that choice, I made the most of every moment.”

With Hemsworth taking over as Geralt, Allan acknowledged that production on season 4 felt different—partly because Ciri and Geralt spend most of the season separated, interacting mainly through flashbacks and visions. She admitted Cavill remained on her mind while filming, noting, “He’s the Geralt I grew up with.”

Cavill’s exit sparked strong reactions from longtime fans, and Allan’s continued presence is seen as a stabilizing factor within the series. As Ciri and Geralt form the emotional core of the story, her decision to stay may help audiences adjust to Hemsworth in the lead role.

Season 4 of The Witcher is currently streaming on Netflix, featuring Liam Hemsworth as the new Geralt of Rivia.
