ISLAMABAD:

Special Assistant to the Prime Minister on Industries and Production (SAPM) Haroon Akhtar Khan on Wednesday chaired a meeting that discussed in detail the regional challenges facing small and medium enterprise (SME) clusters, particularly the issues related to logistics, value addition, financing and infrastructure.

Gilgit-Baltistan Chamber officials highlighted that the region was rich in natural resources and its SMEs deserved special attention as shortage of warehouses and logistical constraints posed major challenges to business growth.

They emphasised the need for Smeda's support for developing value-added products and establishing warehousing facilities. The chamber also pointed to the immense potential of G-B in tourism, agriculture and mining.

SAPM Haroon Akhtar directed Smeda to work jointly with the G-B Chamber to prepare a feasibility report on warehouse development. Also, the State Bank of Pakistan must play a key role in improving access to finance for the SMEs.

The Mirpur Chamber informed the meeting that Mangla Dam offered a promising opportunity to boost seafood exports and Smeda's assistance was crucial for capitalising on the potential. They underscored the need for launching a digital SME programme for AJK as well as highlighted the difficulties encountered by local SMEs in availing of loan schemes.

The chamber noted that AJK walnuts, honey and apples were enjoying a high demand in international markets. They also emphasised the importance of imparting skills to women entrepreneurs, particularly in fruit harvesting and startups.

The PM aide responded that the government was working to establish single-window desks at the provincial level to facilitate the SMEs.
