Zooey Deschanel and Charlie Cox star as exes reunited by their dog in the heartwarming Prime Video rom-com Merv

Zooey Deschanel and Charlie Cox are teaming up in Merv, a new romantic comedy about love, second chances, and an adorable dog that brings two exes back together.
Directed by Jessica Swale, the film will premiere on Prime Video on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.
In Merv, Deschanel and Cox play Anna and Russ, a former couple navigating life after their breakup while sharing custody of their dog, Merv. When their furry companion begins acting strangely, a vet diagnoses him with “the blues.” Hoping to lift Merv’s spirits, Russ takes him on a beach getaway to Florida—only for Anna to unexpectedly tag along. What follows is a heartwarming, holiday-set story about rekindled love and canine devotion.

“I loved the story of a couple breaking up but sharing a dog — and then having to reunite to cure their dog’s melancholy,” says Zooey Deschanel, who was drawn to the film’s emotional yet funny premise.
For Charlie Cox, known for his darker roles in Daredevil and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Merv offered a refreshing change. “Tonally, this movie is unlike anything I’ve done before,” he said, adding that working with Deschanel was “like a masterclass.”
Director Jessica Swale praised the duo’s on-screen chemistry, calling them “the perfect rom-com couple — funny, real, and full of heart.”
The film also stars Gus, the dog playing Merv, who reportedly charmed everyone on set. Merv blends humor, warmth, and holiday magic — making it a must-watch romantic comedy this December.
