The Los Angeles Police Department believes that Celeste Rivas Hernandez, the 14-year-old girl whose body was found inside a Tesla belonging to musician D4vd, had likely been deceased for several weeks before the vehicle was discovered.
Speaking with PEOPLE, LAPD Captain and Commanding Officer Scot M. Williams said, “We know that the Tesla had been parked at the location from which it was towed for several weeks, so it is very likely Celeste Rivas Hernandez had been dead for several weeks prior to her body being discovered.”
Williams added, “The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner has not determined a cause or manner of her death, so we don’t know for sure if anyone has any criminal culpability for her death beyond the concealment of her dead body,” noting that the LAPD’s robbery-homicide division is continuing to investigate.
Rivas Hernandez’s body was found in an impounded Tesla on September 8, shortly after the teen’s 15th birthday, while D4vd (real name David Anthony Burke), 20, was on tour in the US. Officers had responded to a foul odor reported from the vehicle, which neighbors said had been parked in the Hollywood Hills for about a month.
While speculation has circulated online about a potential connection between Rivas Hernandez and the singer, Williams emphasized that “as far as their relationship, it would be premature for me to say anything. We are looking into everything.”
D4vd has not been named as a suspect or charged, and his representative has stated that he is fully cooperating with authorities. The discovery of the teen’s body also prompted the cancellation of his remaining US tour dates.
The Riverside County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that Rivas Hernandez had been reported missing from Lake Elsinore, California, multiple times in 2024, though her exact whereabouts before her death remain unclear.
