Critics have broadly responded positively to Ghost of Yotei, Sucker Punch’s new PS5 release, praising its combat, visuals, and lead character while expressing mixed feelings about narrative originality and pacing.
Gadgets360’s review commended the game for its “open-world action and unbelievably striking visuals at every turn.” It noted that the story feels more human, that protagonist Atsu is “fiery and brash,” and that combat is fluid and satisfying.
Videogames Chronicle highlighted improvements over Ghost of Tsushima in visuals and music, though its review also pointed out pacing issues and villains that felt underdeveloped.
Tom’s Guide offered a similarly positive verdict but remarked that Ghost of Yotei introduces “very few new ideas.” While the campaign was described as “disjointed” at times, the combat system and open world design were praised for their scale and technical polish.
Beebom’s assessment focused on the cinematic presentation, immersive environments, and weapon variety. The review praised DualSense integration but flagged drawbacks such as certain visual modes being locked at 30 FPS and a forced aspect ratio in some sequences.
Fan response has been more divided. Reporting from Tech4Gamers noted that while many players appreciate refinements to the established gameplay loop, others believe the game leans too heavily on mechanics and story beats familiar from Ghost of Tsushima.
According to GamesRadar, Ghost of Yotei currently averages around 87/100 on Metacritic from over 100 critic reviews, and about 89/100 on OpenCritic.
Overall, the critical consensus is that Ghost of Yotei excels in combat, setting, and presentation, but does not significantly depart from the formula set by its predecessor.
