Square Enix teases new NieR: Automata game during 9th anniversary livestream
Square Enix confirms NieR: Automata “to be continued” as sales pass 10 million worldwide

Square Enix has indicated that a new NieR: Automata game may be in development, nearly a decade after the original title was released.
The update came during the franchise’s ninth-anniversary livestream, where the publisher reflected on the game’s impact and confirmed that it has surpassed 10 million copies sold worldwide. At the close of the broadcast, Square Enix displayed the message: “Nier: Automata to be continued.”
NieR: Automata launched in 2017 and has since become one of Square Enix’s most commercially successful modern releases.
The action role-playing game gained recognition for its narrative, gameplay systems and characters, contributing to sustained global sales over several years.
While the livestream confirmed that the series will continue, Square Enix did not clarify whether the next project will be a direct sequel, a spin-off, or a new entry set within the same universe. No details were provided regarding platforms, release dates or development status.
However, previous comments from key NieR: Automata developers in summer 2025 suggested that a new collaborative project was underway. At that time, the team indicated that any reveal might not occur until 2027, pointing to a longer development cycle.
Such a timeframe would coincide with the game’s 10th anniversary, a milestone that could serve as an opportunity for a formal announcement or release.
Further information about the project, including its format and launch window, has yet to be announced.
