Emma Watson has spoken candidly about her strained relationship with Harry Potter author J.K. Rowling, while also reflecting on her ongoing break from acting.

In a recent appearance on the On Purpose With Jay Shetty podcast, Watson discussed her perspective on Rowling’s controversial views on transgender issues and the fallout that followed. The actress, who played Hermione Granger in all eight Harry Potter films, has previously voiced support for the transgender community after Rowling’s 2020 essay and tweets that were widely criticized as transphobic. At the time, Watson affirmed: “Trans people are who they say they are and deserve to live their lives without being constantly questioned.”

Addressing Rowling’s claim that Watson and other co-stars had “ruined” the films for her, the actress said she believes it is possible to both disagree with Rowling’s views and still value the personal experiences they shared. “I will never believe that one negates the other,” Watson explained. “It’s my deepest wish that people who don’t agree with my opinion will love me, and I hope I can keep loving people who I don’t necessarily share the same opinion with.” She added that she was most disappointed a real conversation was never made possible, though she remains open to dialogue.

Watson also reflected on her seven-year hiatus from acting, telling Hollywood Authentic she misses the creative process but not the promotional side of the industry. Calling film promotion “soul-destroying,” she said the break has made her feel “maybe the happiest and healthiest” she has ever been.
