Nintendo and Illumination have officially revealed the title of their upcoming animated sequel to The Super Mario Bros. Movie.

The follow-up will be called The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, drawing inspiration from Mario’s acclaimed space adventures on the Nintendo Wii.

Directors Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic are returning for the project, alongside screenwriter Matthew Fogel and composer Brian Tyler. The voice cast from the record-breaking 2023 movie will also reprise their roles, including Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, and Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek.

The first film became the highest-grossing video game adaptation in history, earning more than $1.3 billion worldwide. With the sequel, Universal Pictures has set a theatrical release date of April 3, 2026.

Fans are already speculating about new characters, particularly the introduction of Rosalina, the cosmic princess central to the Galaxy games. Illumination founder and CEO Chris Meledandri teased that further casting announcements will be shared as production continues.

Speaking during Friday’s Nintendo Direct, Meledandri noted the sequel’s release aligns with Mario’s 40th anniversary. “From its groundbreaking world-building to its iconic characters and unforgettable music, the Super Mario Bros. have left a lasting impact on the very fabric of our culture,” he said. He added that while Super Mario Galaxy is the core inspiration, the new film will feature surprises from across Mario’s history.

With its star-studded cast and space-themed storyline, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie is expected to be one of the most anticipated animated releases of 2026.
