The Conjuring: Last Rites has stormed the global box office with an impressive $187 million opening weekend, securing its place as the second-biggest worldwide debut ever for a horror film.

The record is topped only by 2017’s It, which launched with $190 million.

The latest entry in Warner Bros.’ long-running supernatural franchise earned $83 million domestically and $104 million internationally. Its overseas launch alone surpassed It: Chapter Two’s $92 million, setting a new record for the largest international horror opening. Leading markets included Mexico with $13.3 million, the United Kingdom at $8.8 million, Brazil at $7.7 million, and India at $6.7 million.

Premium formats contributed significantly, with Imax reporting $14.3 million globally — its strongest September debut ever. In North America, the film brought in $9.4 million from Imax screenings, making it the platform’s biggest horror launch to date.

Directed by Michael Chaves, The Conjuring: Last Rites reunites Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga as paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren. The film, produced by franchise creator James Wan and Peter Safran, cost $55 million to make and continues the success of the Conjuring universe, which has now generated over $2.3 billion worldwide across titles including The Nun and Annabelle.

Warner Bros. is riding strong momentum at the box office, following recent wins with A Minecraft Movie, Final Destination Bloodlines, Superman, and Weapons. Meanwhile, the studio’s sleeper hit Weapons has crossed $250 million globally on a $38 million budget, reinforcing the demand for original horror alongside established franchises.
