Hollow Knight: Silksong has already become one of 2025’s most significant gaming launches, breaking records across Steam and Twitch. The success has drawn praise from Hololive CEO Motoaki Tanigo, who highlighted Team Cherry’s journey from its early days to global recognition.
The long-awaited sequel debuted on September 4 2025, quickly surpassing 500,000 concurrent players on Steam. Demand was so high that several digital storefronts briefly went offline.
On Twitch, the game topped the charts on launch day, attracting hundreds of thousands of viewers and securing its position as the most-watched title. Within 24 hours, more than 15,000 player reviews marked the release as “Overwhelmingly Positive.”
Tanigo, widely known as YAGOO, acknowledged Team Cherry’s path to success in a LinkedIn post. “When Team Cherry, a small indie developer team from South Australia, shared the trailer for their first game, Hollow Knight, on Reddit, they received many negative comments predicting the game would be an obvious failure,” he wrote.
He went on to note how Hollow Knight went on to sell more than 15 million copies, describing Silksong’s debut as evidence of perseverance and vision.
“They had a dream and a vision. While listening to all feedback, negative and positive, they believed in their project and made it a reality, achieving even more than they could have ever dreamed.”
The Hololive CEO also pointed out that company talents were already streaming the game, before comparing his own career to the developers’ journey.
“For us at COVER, we might be in our ‘Hollow Knight’ era compared to our beginnings, but look forward to our ‘Silksong’ one.”
Silksong’s record-breaking release has placed both Team Cherry and its supporters at the centre of one of the year’s most discussed gaming moments.
