The hit Australian children’s series Bluey is making the leap to the big screen. Disney and BBC Studios have confirmed that a full-length Bluey film will arrive in theatres worldwide on 6 August 2027, marking the show’s first cinematic outing.
The feature-length project is being written and directed by Joe Brumm, the original creator of Bluey, with Richard Jeffrey, who directed much of the early seasons, returning as co-director. Amber Naismith, known for her work on Happy Feet and The Lego Movie, is producing the film, while series composer Joff Bush will provide the score. Fans can also expect the return of familiar voices, including Melanie Zanetti as Chilli and David McCormack as Bandit.
The announcement confirms that the film will debut in cinemas before becoming available on Disney+ worldwide. In Australia, it will stream on ABC Kids and ABC iview following its theatrical run. The project is a joint production between Ludo Studio and BBC Studios, with Disney handling global distribution. Support is also being provided by Screen Australia and the Queensland Government.
Since first airing in 2018, Bluey has become a global phenomenon, celebrated for its heartwarming family stories and humour that resonates with both children and adults. The series has won Emmy and BAFTA awards and reached record-breaking audiences, becoming the most-watched programme on Disney+ globally in 2024.
In a statement, producers described the movie as a continuation of Bluey’s adventures with her parents and younger sister Bingo. Given the show’s worldwide popularity, expectations for the film are already high, and the announcement of a release date has generated excitement among families and fans.
With its proven ability to combine playful storytelling with emotional depth, the Bluey movie is being positioned as a major animated release of 2027, likely to attract audiences far beyond its preschool fan base.
