Chef Gordon Ramsay has revealed he underwent surgery to treat basal cell carcinoma, the most common form of skin cancer.
The 58-year-old shared recovery photos on Instagram, showing bandages and stitches beneath his ear following the procedure. He thanked his doctors for their swift care and encouraged his fans to prioritise sunscreen, adding with humour, “I promise you it’s not a facelift.”
Ramsay, famous for Hell’s Kitchen, MasterChef, and Kitchen Nightmares, is one of the most recognised chefs worldwide. Despite a demanding schedule of restaurants, TV shows, and public appearances, he has urged others not to overlook health concerns, using his platform to raise awareness of skin safety.
Basal cell carcinoma (BCC) develops from basal cells in the skin’s outer layer and typically occurs on sun-exposed areas such as the face, ears, or neck. Though it rarely spreads, untreated BCC can damage surrounding tissue. Early warning signs include shiny or waxy bumps, reddish patches that do not heal, persistent sores, raised pink growths with indented centres, and itchy or painful lesions.
Risk factors for BCC include prolonged UV exposure, light skin and eye colour, age over 50, a history of skin cancer, weakened immune function, and exposure to radiation or toxins.
Treatment options depend on the cancer’s size and location. These may include surgical excision, Mohs micrographic surgery, cryosurgery, topical treatments, or photodynamic therapy.
