Prince William and Kate Middleton, the Prince and Princess of Wales, delayed informing their eldest son, Prince George, about his role as future king until he was seven years old.

The revelation was confirmed by royal historian Robert Lacey in an interview with People magazine, who noted that the couple carefully considered the timing.

According to Lacey, the choice was made to give George a chance to experience the early years of childhood without the pressures of royal responsibility.

When the moment came, William reportedly used the word “destiny” instead of “duty,” reflecting a shift in how the conversation was framed compared to previous generations.

The disclosure marked a turning point in George’s upbringing. At the age of twelve today, he has since begun making more public appearances alongside his parents, gradually being introduced to the expectations tied to his position in the line of succession.

Lacey explained that William and Kate’s decision echoes lessons from William’s own experiences as a child, when the weight of monarchy was made clear much earlier. By waiting until George was older, they sought to allow him to grow into an understanding of his future at a pace they believed appropriate.

Prince George, born in 2013, is second in line to the British throne after his father, Prince William.
