Sydney Sweeney faces box office setbacks with Americana and Eden, despite earlier hit Anyone But You.

Actor Sydney Sweeney has encountered two box office disappointments in as many weeks, Collider reports. The star, who recently headlined the 2023 romantic comedy Anyone But You—a global hit grossing over $200 million—has seen her latest projects struggle commercially.

Both the Quentin Tarantino-inspired Western Americana and Ron Howard’s survival thriller Eden have failed to connect with audiences, earning a combined total of around $2 million. Americana, released last week, opened to less than $1 million domestically. This week, Eden debuted with a similar figure, despite a reported $50 million production budget.

Beyond its financial results, Eden drew attention for its ensemble cast and ambitious subject matter. Inspired by the true story of European settlers attempting to form a community on Floreana Island in the Galápagos, the film stars Jude Law, Vanessa Kirby, Ana de Armas, Daniel Brühl, and Sweeney. It premiered at the 2023 Toronto International Film Festival, where it received mixed reviews. The film currently holds a 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, with critics describing it as uneven but noting Ron Howard’s willingness to explore unfamiliar material.

While these setbacks follow months of heightened media scrutiny surrounding Sweeney’s personal and professional life, her career momentum continues. She is currently filming the third season of HBO’s Euphoria, the role that first brought her widespread recognition. Looking ahead, she is set to star in David Michôd’s boxing drama Christy and Paul Feig’s The Housemaid.
