AMC Theatres, the world’s largest cinema chain, has unveiled a new midweek promotion offering 50% off movie tickets every Tuesday and Wednesday for members of its free AMC Stubs rewards program.

The initiative officially begins on July 8 and replaces the former $5 Tuesday deal for Stubs members.

The new offer applies to standard movie tickets, while online fees and charges for premium formats like IMAX or 3D still apply. Additionally, AMC is sweetening the deal by offering discounted small popcorn and drink combos on these days.

This change is part of AMC’s broader strategy to increase midweek attendance amid a box office that remains down 25% compared to 2019, the last full pre-pandemic year. Tuesdays have traditionally been one of the busiest days for theaters offering discounts, and AMC hopes the expanded promotion will help fill auditoriums during slower weekdays.

CEO Adam Aron emphasized that the new 50% discount plan aims to offer greater value for budget-conscious moviegoers. “Clear, concise pricing on both Tuesdays and Wednesdays will resonate more with value-seeking guests,” Aron said.

The change has received mixed responses. Some moviegoers welcome the expanded discount days and snack savings, while others argue the switch from flat $5 tickets to percentage-based pricing may not be as economical, particularly in high-cost markets.

AMC, which has experimented with various strategies—including launching a popcorn brand, a credit card, and investing in mining—continues to seek creative ways to recover post-pandemic. Industry watchers speculate that other cinema chains like Regal and Cinemark may soon roll out similar midweek promotions.
