SINDH:

More than 80 peacocks have died and hundreds more have fallen ill in various rural areas of Tharparkar, reportedly due to a mysterious disease compounded by intense heat and lack of food and water.

According to residents of the affected regions—including Islamkot, Nagarparkar, and Chachro tehsils—peacocks are exhibiting symptoms such as flu, fever, throat inflammation, and in some cases, vision loss. Local accounts suggest that the birds are unable to recover once the symptoms set in.

The impact is particularly severe in forested areas, where peacocks already struggle with rising temperatures and dehydration during the summer season.

Peacocks are considered an iconic species of the Thar desert, often admired for their vibrant plumage and cultural significance. Their declining health has raised concerns among wildlife enthusiasts and conservationists.

Authorities have yet to confirm the cause of the illness or announce any formal investigation or emergency response in the area.

Mithi and other parts of Tharparkar continue to face intense heat, with temperatures holding at 42°C today. Hot and dry weather persists across most of Sindh, with no rainfall expected.

Most of the country will experience mainly hot and dry weather. The highest temperatures recorded on Sunday were Jacobabad (43°C) and Mithi, Mirpurkhas, and Shaheed Benazirabad (42°C).
