The Women's Parliamentary Caucus (WPC) sub-committee on Tuesday called for a ban on junk food and fizzy drinks in schools, citing Pakistan's alarming ranking as the world's leading country for diabetes.
The panel, chaired by Zahra Wadood Fatemi, said that women's health was directly linked to the well-being of entire families and stressed the need for stringent measures to curb sugar consumption.
Lawmakers described sugar as a "silent killer" and warned about the health hazards of canned and packaged foods, which were widely consumed despite their detrimental effects.
The members of the sub-committee proposed banning junk food, packaged food and fizzy drinks in households and enforcing stricter regulations on private school canteens, similar to existing restrictions in government schools.
They recommended seeking input from the Higher Education Commission (HEC) or the Private Educational Institutions Regulatory Authority (PEIRA) to establish guidelines for canteen operations in private schools.
