Jon M. Chu, fresh off a Golden Globe win for Wicked, has confirmed that Britney Spears will play an integral role in the creative process of her upcoming biopic. In an interview with Entertainment Tonight, Chu shared that while the project is in its early stages, Spears’ involvement is set in stone. “She will be very involved in this. I have ideas and approaches, but it’s very, very early,” Chu stated.
The biopic, produced by Universal Pictures, is based on Spears’ 2023 memoir, where the pop icon shared intimate details about her stardom and personal struggles. Chu, a longtime fan of Spears, emphasized his commitment to telling her story authentically, saying, “I want to do her justice and tell her story right.” The memoir’s revelations about the highs and lows of Spears’ life have made it a compelling foundation for the film.
Casting for the role of Spears remains undecided. Chu acknowledged fan speculation and expressed openness to suggestions, stating that casting will depend on the overall approach to the film. Producer Marc Platt, who collaborated with Chu on Wicked, will also produce the biopic, adding his expertise to the project.
Before fully committing to the Spears biopic, Chu is focused on completing Wicked: For Good. Starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, the sequel has reportedly finished filming and is set to release on November 21, 2025. Chu described the Wicked films as timeless cinematic experiences, reflecting on their meaningful impact during his acceptance speech at the Golden Globes.
Platt confirmed that Wicked: For Good will remain the team’s priority for the year, with the Spears biopic being a long-term endeavor. Once completed, Chu plans to fully shift his attention to the pop star’s life story.
