Macaulay Culkin recently revealed that he almost purchased the iconic Home Alone house, located in Winnetka, Illinois, when it went on the market in May 2024.
Speaking during a screening of the film at Illinois' Rosemont Theater, Culkin shared that he considered buying the $5.25 million home “just for giggles” to turn it into a “movie fun house.” The idea included allowing fans to sled down the stairs like his character, Kevin McCallister, did in the holiday classic.
However, the former child star decided against the purchase, citing his busy life as a father of two with actress Brenda Song. “I got kids,” Culkin explained. “I’m busy, man.”
The Home Alone house, which sold in June after just one week on the market, remains a popular pilgrimage site for fans. Visitors continue to snap photos and leave mementos at the property, celebrating the legacy of the blockbuster 1990 film that grossed $476.7 million worldwide and launched Culkin to stardom.
Culkin reflected on his evolving relationship with the Home Alone franchise, describing it as “a curse and a blessing.” As a father, he now watches the movie with his children, who amusingly believe they starred in it. “My 3-year-old thinks he’s Kevin,” Culkin joked, recalling how his son claimed he was the one who “fought the burglars.”
The home’s legacy also featured in the documentary The House From…, which revealed behind-the-scenes details, including how Culkin cut down a real tree from the backyard for a movie scene. Despite not purchasing the house, Culkin continues to honor Home Alone with his Nostalgia Tour, connecting with fans during the holiday season.
